Operation Red Wings
Operation Red Wings (June 28, 2005) was a reconnaissance mission in the Hindu Kush of Afghanistan involving four members of the Navy SEALs. The SEAL team was outnumbered in a fierce firefight after they were spotted by local nationals. Pinned down and severely wounded, there was no signal available to make a distress call. Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own life, Michael moved into the open to transmit a call to get help for his men. As a barrage of bullets flew at his open position, Navy Seal Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy was heard saying “Thank You” before hanging up the call to save his Navy Seal team. An MH-47 Chinook helicopter, with eight additional SEALs and eight Army Night Stalkers aboard, was sent in. A rocket-propelled grenade struck the helicopter, killing all 16 men aboard. Of the 20 men involved only one managed to survive after he was blasted over a ridge and knocked unconscious
